1. General Information about the Disease
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) – a type of cancer, where lymphocytes are overproduced in the bone marrow. Usually, there are no symptoms. As the disease advances, signs such as fatigue, fever, swelling of the lymph nodes and weight loss for no apparent reason might occur. As with most diseases, it worsens gradually. CLL is initiated by a mutation in the DNA of the blood-producing cells which results in the formation of abnormal lymphocytes. These lymphocytes accumulate in the blood and various organs, where they cause complications. Apart from being ineffective, they also do not die and continue to multiply without limits.
Risk factors include age, as it happens to have a higher incidence rate in older adults as well as family history, race and exposure to various chemicals such as Agent Orange. According to WHO data of 2014, males are more prone to disease progression. Also, whites have a higher risk of developing chronic lymphocytic leukemia than are people of other races. According to the latest data, the five-year survival rate for people over the age of 20 is 84%.
2. Statistic Information about Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
CLL incidence rates are the highest in Western countries and the US, where it is the most common type of leukemia but is exceptionally rare in Asian countries like China and Japan, where it accounts for only 10% of all leukemia cases. Since rates of CLL are increased in people who have been exposed to various chemicals, great number of older war veterans have CLL due to coming in-contact with Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.
3. Information about Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Clinical Trials
Over the 10-year period from 2009 to 2019, 1413 Clinical Trials were worked on throughout the world.
